Photo Activation

Upon UVA (ultraviolet-A) irradiation, methoxsalen forms either single-stranded or double-stranded DNA crosslinks, which ultimately result in apoptosis. Methoxsalen, the active drug in extracorporeal photopheresis, belongs to a class of naturally occurring compounds known as psoralens.
