Before Treatment
How to best prepare
There are some things you need do to help each photopheresis session go as smoothly as possible.
For the two days before treatment:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Avoid caffeine.
- Avoid alcohol.
Caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate you. Being well-hydrated promotes better blood flow during the procedure.
The evening before treatment, eat a low-fat meal. You should avoid foods such as high-fat meats, fried foods, cheeses, eggs, butter, and desserts. High levels of fat in the blood can interfere with the cell-separation process and could result in the procedure being stopped before completion.
The day of treatment:
- Eat a low-fat breakfast and lunch.
- Do not skip any meals.
- Minimize fluids and visit the restroom right before the procedure so that you remain comfortable.
- Consult your physician regarding any medication you are taking and how that can affect photopheresis.
